I am a bit surprised that, in the book presentation, Microsoft Research labels data-intensive science as «emerging» though.

Bionformatics emerged 20 years ago, and its underrated logical foundation, agent-based modelling, came up in the early Seventies.

Even large chunks of mathematical research have been data-intensive and computer-driven since decades (e.g., the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search project is 17 years old).
